We recently completed an exciting project providing two solar-powered charging stations for Exeter University’s robot lawn mowers. Each robotic mower now has its own dedicated remote charging station, designed to keep their grounds maintenance efficient, sustainable and fully off-grid.
Supporting 150,000 Square Feet of Sports Pitches
Exeter University’s robot lawn mowers maintain an impressive 150,000 square feet of sports pitches, ensuring the grass is kept in perfect condition throughout the year. The requirement was for a renewable energy solution that would allow their robotic mowers to recharge independently, without relying on mains power.
Off-Grid Solar Power System Design
To meet these needs, we designed, built and supplied a fully off-grid solar system for each charging station. The system components include:
- 6 ground-mounted 440W solar panels
- Victron 150/45 charge controller
- Victron 1600 Multiplus 2 inverter/charger
- 1 x 5.12kWh Pytes V5A lithium battery
- Victron Cerbo GX communication module
Each system is capable of providing clean, reliable power to keep the robot mowers charged and ready for use at all times.
Designed for Self-Installation with Expert Support
After receiving their technical requirements, our team carefully designed and constructed each system. We supplied the complete setup for self-installation under our guidance, ensuring everything was straightforward and safe to assemble. Once installation was complete, we conducted final system checks and commissioning to confirm full functionality.
Sustainable Grounds Maintenance for the Future
This project demonstrates how renewable technology can enhance everyday campus operations. By integrating solar energy with robotic lawn care, Exeter University has taken another step towards sustainability and reduced its environmental footprint.
