The Victron Orion XS 1400 represents a complete re-engineering of the traditional DC-DC battery charger, delivering a massive 1400 Watts of continuous power in an ultra-compact chassis. This model is uniquely versatile because it is a dual-voltage unit, allowing it to act as a 12V to 24V or a 24V to 12V battery charger and voltage converter. This makes it an ideal solution for mixed-voltage systems on larger yachts, commercial vehicles, and complex overland rigs.
One of the biggest challenges with high-power chargers in tight spaces is heat. The Orion XS solves this by using a specially designed aluminium circuit board that acts as an efficient heat sink. This clever design allows the unit to run with an outstanding 98.5 per cent efficiency, maintaining its full 1400W rated output in temperatures up to 40 degrees Celsius without needing any noisy internal cooling fans.
For installers and owners of newer vehicles, its smart alternator compatibility is essential. Modern Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines often lower their alternator voltage to save fuel, which stops traditional chargers from working properly. The Orion XS actively compensates for this voltage drop, ensuring your house battery receives a precise and controlled charge.
Safety is managed by Victron's SafetyShield+ suite, which protects against short circuits, overcharging, and overheating. To protect your vehicle's alternator from damage, you can use the VictronConnect app to precisely limit the input current. The smart four-stage charging algorithm automatically adjusts itself to match how deeply your batteries have been discharged, which helps extend their overall life. Additionally, a VE.Direct port is built into the unit, allowing you to connect it to a GX device like a Cerbo GX for complete system integration and remote monitoring via the VRM portal. If your power demands increase over time, you can easily connect an unlimited number of these units in parallel to scale up your charging capacity.
